2016 Scholarships Awarded
The Women in Defense (WID) Mid-Atlantic Chapter received a total of 12 applicants vying for the WID Mid-Atlantic Chapter Mary Doak STEM Education Scholarship. This was the first year the chapter announced the scholarship in our entire area of responsibility including Baltimore City and County, and York and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania.
We are pleased to announce this year's top scoring applicant, Ms. Jennifer Owrutsky, of York County, Pennsylvania. She attended Red Lion High School where she was class president and graduated in the top 2% of her class. She plans to attend York College this fall seeking a degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Physics. We were very pleased to discover that she was this year's Pennsylvania STEM Competition winner as well. In her application she wrote, "Throughout my college experience and into my career, I will be a member of the Society of Women Engineers and I hope to inspire other women in STEM to follow their dreams, as I have been inspired by the professionals around me." Congratulations Ms. Owrutsy!
This year, a second WID Mid-Atlantic Chapter Mary Doak STEM Education Scholarship was privately funded by a member, Ms. Kathy Kunda, and will be awarded to Cecil County student, Ms. Olivia Richart. She graduated from North East High School and she will be attending The Pennsylvania State University this fall seeking a degree in Agricultural Sciences. Ms. Richart revealed in her application that she was 1st place winner of the Maryland State FFA Agronomy Competition; the 1st place winner of the Easter Shore Regional FBLA Agri-business Exam, and the 1st place winner of the Maryland State FBLA Argi-business Exam. Congratulations Ms. Richart!
